Awesome strong light travel pack
I absolutely love this bag. I recently tested the pack to the extreme traveling through india for 25 days then London/england for a week. it went through some of the extreme high temperatures in India and some the coldest in London with snow. The Osprey 50 can really hold a lot of gear. the stitching is strong enough to hold odd shaped items that tend to "poke" through on cheaper bags. The shape of the main compartment takes some getting used to due to it conforming shape. The shoulder straps on the Osprey 50 are very comfortable number one and do not dig into your shoulder blades at the top. There are plenty of adjustments to get the weight of our shoulders and distribute it to your hips. The mesh lining in the back of the Osprey 50 keeps the pack off of your back while maintaining stability. The mesh is made strong and also allows for storage of a water bladder. I have no complaints about the Osprey 50 what so ever. I am happy with my...

I miss this pack!
I recently bought this pack for a trip to Mt.Rainier and had to return it as it would not meet the size recommendations. I wish it did because this pack was awesome. The front pockets were ideal, It had lots of space inside and it fit perfectly. The Atmos suspension and padding design were extra comfortable and put the weight in the hips where it belongs. I traded this one for the Aether 70 which boasts more space but the suspension and padding are inferior. I think I will switch to the Atmos 65. Overall love the Atmos series.

Excellent bag
I bought my atmos 50 a few weeks ago and I really like it. I put 45 lbs of weight (well over the recommended capacity) and it worked beautifully. I'm 6'4 and the large size fits perfect, but be aware if you have a skinny waist (i wear 33 in pants) the belt loops might be too small. I had to cinch them all the way tight and it felt ok, but if I lost any weight it wouldn't fit me anymore. The pockets and straps are extremely well thought out. On the front of the bag are two very long pockets, long enough for me to fit a tripod in one and my tent poles in the other. My only complaint about the bag is the shoulder straps. They are pretty thin, and aren't very well padded. My shoulders were very sore after carrying a 45 lb pack 12 miles.

Lightweight and lots of room
I bought this pack for 2-3 day backpacking trips around Southern California. It's a top-loader, so packing everything in requires a bit of push and pull, but the pack is light, fits very snugly against the body, and is not bulky. The hip support system is phenomenal. I had 40 pounds in my pack, and could barely feel it on my shoulders or back.Another great thing about this pack is the back itself. There's a mesh frame and supports that hold the pack away from your back, so there's plenty of room for air circulation. No more sweaty backs!Highly customizable, highly portable, highly recommended.

Love this pack
This pack has a purpose, it is a ventilated pack. It does this job extremely well by letting air flow around your back. It also has hole filled shoulder/hip straps that are surprisingly rugged and comfy. This pack has a lot of cool features. From those rounded mini bungee/soft-plastic zipper rings, shoulder straps with a whistle, a stretch pocket in front, axe holsters, mesh pockets on the hip straps, floating removable top compartment, just about everything.I'm in love with mine. I tried on anything and everything REI had, it was between this and a Deuter pack with similar off the back construction, but the Osprey out-classed it by far.The easiest 5 stars I've ever given

Great Pack
This pack is perfect for full weekend hikes. The best part for me is how much it breathes and keeps my body cool on a long hot day of backpacking and the weight distribution is perfect. If you are considering this pack you should get it.

Best pack I've ever had
I have a slightly earlier model of the Atmos 65 that's two years old and differs slightly from the new model. In mine the internal frame is shaped to curve well away from mesh against the wearer's back. This allows plenty of air circulation (and I use this space to hang my hydration bladder), but it reduces the size of the pack's main compartment, so much so that some large items, particularly bear canisters, may not fit. The new one reduces the curve to keep the compartment a bit closer to the wearer's back, creating a larger cargo area, while still leaving plenty of room for air to circulate. That's one of the distinctive features of this pack; the ventilation area between the mesh against your back and the cargo compartment keeps your back cool and dry. Also, the frame material in the new model seems to be a bit lighter, and it has a feature to allow carrying trekking poles by your side so you can stow and retrieve them without removing your pack. But everything else...

Best Pack Ever! (and I've owned a few)
The Osprey Atmos 65 is an unbelievably well-built pack. It is light, the pockets are in just the right places and it carries the load well. I bought it to replace a very worn Kelty which I had used for years as my "heavy" daypack (I have a couple of activities that involve 30 lbs of day gear, this pack is really an overnight/weekend pack). I immediately tested it on a 4,000' elevation gain snow hike and was amazed at how well the air-back works to keep my back cool and dry. At first it's a bit unnerving to not have your back sweating like mad but remove the pack in sub-zero after two hours of going up hill and things are great. Very little sweat, very little "chill".I next took it for a couple of nights backpacking. It fits 30-40 lbs of gear very well. Once again, the thing I noticed was how well the pockets are designed and the attention to detail. The compression straps work great, it is easy to attach trekking poles or ice axes, and those attachments work for...

well engineered and thought out
This pack is excellent.I tried on many packs before choosing this style and i chose it based on comfort. With the pack loaded with a sleeping bag on the bottom it stands upright well. The side pockets for water bottles work excellent, it just took me a few tries to learn how to slide my finger in to guide the bottle. The air suspension really makes a huge difference and only the shoulder strap areas, lower back and waist areas were soaked with sweat instead of the entire back.Overall if you use each compartment and strap how it was engineered you will be amazed as i am with the thought that went in to the design.=)-pat

Osprey Atmos 50 Pack

While it is quite obvious that I love this pack and find it an improvement on my beloved first generation Atmos in nearly every way, there is one thing that I would have liked to have seen integrated into the design. Designed for traveling and backpacking light, the Atmos offers plenty of storage options for packing all of our necessary gear. In the 2012 edition of the pack Osprey has updated the design once again and just like everything else about this new bag, the evolutionary upgrade improves upon the original. Having access through the bottom or  side can be very useful when trying to locate hard to find gear items, as it can be a bit inconvenient to have to completely unload the pack just to get to those base layers you stuffed to the bottom on the off...   One of my favorite features of the previous version of this pack was how easy it is to adjust the fit and how comfortable it is to wear when you've found the proper settings.   Over the years backpack manufacturers have devised a number of different suspension systems that are designed to help provide ventilation while wearing their packs. Neither version of this pack offers access to the bottom of the main compartment other than through the top.

For all those with back issues or those that do not want back issues, a lightweight pack will help in keeping the general load manageable. Since the bulk of the pack is about an inch away from your back, and simply because of the side vents which also encourage air circulation, your back is kept cool and dry. This consists of a lightweight alloy frame which holds the pack away from your back.
